UN HQ, Manhattan, New York, United States | April 3, 2025: The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Liberia to the United Nations, H.E. Lewis G. Brown, II, paid a courtesy visit on his Cuban counterpart H.E Mr. Ernesto Soberon.

During the meeting Ambassador Brown praised the strong and deepening bilateral relations between the two countries. He recalled his official visit to Cuba in 2017, where he presented his Letter of Credence to the Vice President of the Republic of Cuba, H.E. Mr. Salvador Valdes Mesa during an official ceremony held at the Revolutionary Palace in Havana. 

He informed his counterpart that plans are underway for a visit to Havana to present his Letter of Credence where the Permanent Mission of Liberia to the United Nations has concurrent jurisdiction.

Ambassador Brown said that Liberia will work with the Government of Cuba to establish a full-fledged diplomatic presence in Havana. Saying “Our relationship with Cuba is such an important one.”  He recalled how Cuba dispatched a contingent of medical doctors to Liberia during the Ebola crisis and praised the Cuban doctors who selflessly worked along with Liberia medical practitioners in eradicating the disease from Liberia. He also commended Cuba for its contributions to human capital development in Liberia through the provision of numerous scholarships over the years.

He emphasized Liberia's principled position on the self-determination of nations and belief in a just and rule-based international system.

Ambassador Brown used the occasion to request Cuba’s support for Liberia’s bid for a Non-Permanent Seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term.

The Cuban Ambassador to the UN welcomed Amb. Brown and thanked him for the courtesy visit. He praised Liberia’s effort in pursuit of a Non-Permanent Seat on the UN Security Council and said that the Government of Cuba favors the presence of Liberia on the Security Council.

The two Ambassadors committed to working together to deepen the already strong fraternal bonds between the Republics Liberia and Cuba.
