The Republic of Liberia has received the endorsement of the African Group of Ambassadors to the United Nations to serve as Vice-Chair of the Bureau of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization.

The Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization was established by the United Nations General Assembly at its Twenty-ninth (29th) Session in 1974 to consider specific proposals that Governments might make with a view to enhancing the ability of the United Nations to achieve its purposes; as well as other suggestions for the more effective functioning of the United Nations that might not require amendments to the Charter.

Represented by His Excellency Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr.,  Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of Liberia to the United Nations, Liberia will serve as Vice-Chair for the 2020 Session of the Special Committee, which convenes from February 18-26, 2020.

The 2020 Session, in accordance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution 74/190 of  December 18, 2019, will consider all proposals concerning the question of the maintenance of international peace and security in all its aspects; including strengthening the relationship and cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations.

The Special Committee will also consider the question of the implementation of the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations relating to assistance to third States affected by the application of sanctions, and the question of the peaceful settlement of disputes between States.

His Excellency Ambassador Franck Kokou Kpayedo, Permanent Representative of Togo to the United Nations, in his capacity as Chair of the African Group of Ambassadors for the month of January 2020, expressed confidence that Ambassador Kemayah will justify the confidence reposed in him by the African Group and ably serve as Vice-Chair for the 2020 Session of the Special Committee from February 18-26, 2020.

Reacting to Liberia's endorsement to serve as Vice-Chair of the Special Committee, Ambassador Kemayah, on behalf of His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah, President of the Republic of Liberia and the Government and People of Liberia, thanked the African Group for yet another endorsement and described it as a testament of Liberia's ability to contribute meaningfully to the sustenance of global peace and security.

Ambassador Kemayah also thanked the African Group for the confidence reposed in him as the Permanent Representative of Liberia to represent Africa on such a strategic committee and assured the African Group, that as other posts served, he will strive for excellence in the discharge of his duty and representation of the Republic of Liberia and Africa for the 2020 Session of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization from February 18-26, 2020.

The African Group's endorsement of Liberia to serve as Vice-Chair of the  Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization follows its recent endorsement of Liberia to represent Africa on two (2) United Nations Bodies.

The African Group in December 2019, endorsed Liberia to represent it on the Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a period of three (3) years each, beginning 2021.

Liberia is also the current Vice President of the United Nations Conference of State Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
