The Liberia Country-Specific Configuration of the Peacebuilding Commission met on 20 June 2019 in New York to discuss the situation in Liberia. The members of the configuration were briefed by members of the Government of Liberia, including the Minister of Finance and Development Planning Mr. Samuel D. Tweah Jr., Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Liberia, Mr. Yacoub El Hillo.

The members of the Commission noted the peaceful manner in which the 7 June 2019 protest took place and commended the commitment to dialogue by all stakeholders. They welcomed that the Government of Liberia respected the right to peaceful assembly and for ensuring that safety was provided during the protest.  The members of the Commission also recognized the mediatory role played by the AU, ECOWAS and the UN. 

The members of the Commission also welcomed the call on 11 June 2019 by the President of the Republic of Liberia, H.E. George Manneh Weah, for a “round table discussion” on the way forward for the economy. 

The members of the Commission stressed the importance of inclusiveness, including the important role of women and youth, all stakeholders working to uphold democratic principles, national dialogue, unity and respect for the rule of law to move Liberia’s peacebuilding and development goals forward.  They underlined the need to consolidate progress and ensure the irreversibility of peace dividends. The Commission stands ready to continue to support the Government and the people of Liberia in their efforts to sustain peace.”
