80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

"Better Together"

UN HQ, Manhattan, New York, United States | October 7, 2025: Mr. Chair, Let me begin by congratulating you on your election. My delegation aligns itself with the statements delivered by Guinea-Bissau on behalf of the African Group and Iraq on behalf the Group of 77 and China, and wishes to add the following in my national capacity.

The Third Committee remains vital for promoting human rights, social development, and the protection of vulnerable groups. Liberia reaffirms its commitment to the UN Charter, international human rights law, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Mr. Chair,
Having emerged from conflict, Liberia continues to consolidate democracy, uphold the rule of law, and promote civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Through our National Human Rights Action Plan, and with strengthened institutions such as the Independent National Commission on Human Rights, we remain steadfast in our human rights commitments.

In 2023, a historic ban on Female Genital Mutilation by Liberia’s Council of Chiefs and Elders—backed by government and civil society—marked a major step in ending harmful traditional practices. The recently passed Gender Equality Bill, mandating 30% female representation in public leadership, further reflects our dedication to gender equity.

Mr. Chair,
With over 60% of our population under 35, youth empowerment through education, skills training, and entrepreneurship remains a national priority. We are also expanding social protection for persons with disabilities, the elderly, and marginalized communities.

Recognizing the link between climate change and displacement, Liberia is integrating climate mobility into national planning. We remain committed to humanitarian protection for refugees and migrants, in line with our obligations.

As a newly elected non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2026– 2027, Liberia is ready to contribute its experience in peacebuilding, reconciliation, and human rights to global efforts.

In closing, Liberia’s story affirms that nations can rebuild and uphold human dignity after conflict. We stand ready to work with all partners to build a more just, inclusive, and peaceful world.

Thank you.
