New York, June 3, 2025 — In a landmark achievement, the Republic of Liberia has been elected to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term.
Liberia secured an overwhelming 181 out of 187 votes cast by UN member states during elections held at the General Assembly on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
With this milestone, Liberia becomes the final founding member of the United Nations to serve on the Security Council—one of the six principal organs of the UN charged with the maintenance of international peace and security.
Announcing the election results during the 73rd plenary meeting of the General Assembly, H.E. Philemon Yang, President of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, declared that Liberia, along with Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Latvia, had been elected as non-permanent members of the Security Council. The new members will begin their two-year terms on January 1, 2026.
Speaking at a press steakout moments after the announcement, Cllr. Deweh E. Gray, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, expressed profound gratitude to the member states for their vote of confidence. Representing the Government and people of Liberia, she reaffirmed the nation’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism, peace, and justice.
She told media representatives at the UN Headquarters that the moment was not only a reflection of Liberia’s enduring commitment to peace and international cooperation but also a tribute to those who paved the way—from peacekeepers and diplomats to citizens who believed in a better future. Cllr. Gray dedicated Liberia’s victory to the values of dialogue over discord and unity over division. Liberia’s Deputy Foreign Minister then thanked the President of the Republic of Liberia, H.E. Joseph N. Boakai, Sr., for leading the charge on all fronts and providing full support to the efforts that culminated into such an achievement.
The election marks a historic transformation for Liberia—from once being the subject of UN peacekeeping efforts to now playing an active leadership role in global peace and security deliberations.
Security Council elections are conducted by secret ballot, with seats allocated based on regional representation. A two-thirds majority of the 193-member General Assembly is required for election.
Liberia looks forward to working constructively with all Council members and the broader UN membership to advance global peace, equity, and shared prosperity.
